About this weblog

On September 15, 2008, the first trial for the federal crime of torture will begin in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. USA v. Roy Belfast is a landmark case in human rights and international criminal law — the first time the United States government has indicted a defendant for the felony crime of torture (18 U.S.C. 2340 and 2340A).

USAvBelfast.org was created to provide the public in America, Liberia, and elsewhere, with constantly updated information from the trial, as well as analysis of the issues raised by the litigation. Law students from the University of Miami and Florida International University are attending the trial and will report here on the proceedings. They will also write analytical articles, as human rights advocates and legal experts. This information is intended to provide the public with accurate information about the trial in a  contextual framework for understanding the implications of what happens in the courtroom.
